by admin on July 20, 2010
I have one of those western saddle pads thats really thick. You know its not a blanket but its a thick pad. Its really dirty so I was wondering what a good way to clean it would be.

My old barrel pad was thin and little, so I washed it in the washing machine.
But the one I have now is thick and long so I would actually hose it out and scrub it with soap, try and ring it out and let it dry in a warm sunny area so it doesn’t rot.

It depends upon the pad. I know the Koolbacks, Woolbacks etc you just throw them in the wash on COLD water and they are GREAT! Your pad may work in the wash but probably can’t put it in the dryer so it’s going to take several days to dry out.
The next time you buy a saddle pad, make sure it’s machine washable. I’ve got one Koolback that’s 34 years old and is still working.

I normally clean my saddle pad before a show because i know its goin to get dirty if i clean it every day
i wipe it down with a rag or if it is not that bad u can use duck tape
it also depends on if u want to wash it some pads i wouldn’t ya
if you live near a horse store go there to see what they say

I used to just put in the washing machine and that worked pretty well. But it left the hair all over the machine and my mother wouldn’t let me do it anymore. So I do it during the summer. I take a hose and some Dawn dish soap and a scrub brush and scrub it and then rinse it. That works pretty well and gets the hair out too.
