How do I sew a hole in my western saddle pad?
by admin on August 3, 2010
I just got a hand-me-down western saddle pad but it has a hole in it. It is really thick so I cant use a sewing machine and a needle wont go through it. How do I sew it?
Thanx
Even sewing by hand a needle wont go through.

If your just going to use it to practice in just patch it, but if not try hemming it by hand

They make industrial sewing machines for things like that and i understand that you dont want to go buy one just to do a quick fix but ask around and see if anyone has one that yoiu could use. If not try to stitch it by hand.

Another note on the industrial sewing machine thing, if you can find a saddler, the kind that fix saddles rather than sell them they almost certainly have one and I imagine would sew it up for you. Your best bet is probably patching it though as otherwise I can see it bunching up. My mind is wandering towards cute patchwork saddle pads now

you didnt say what the saddle pad was made of.
If its a thick old felt pad. Get some wool from the craft store, fill the hole. Saturate the pad with warm soapy water and rub back and forth over the hole. It will “felt” in with the edges of the hole and repair it.
for cloth your going to need to get a sewing Awl http://www.emocs.com/sewingawl.htm that will puncture the fabric, or leather even and allow you to do repairs. Fairly handy tool to have around as I have restitched reins and bridles with it a few times.
